Foreign Soccer Player in Cambodian League

African looking man with light curly hair, wearing sport uniform, the body covered in sweat after 30 minutes training, Chukwuma Ohuruogu, 23, known as a Nigerian soccer player of Cambodia Soccer Club (Boeung Ket). Wuma, a striker, first get involved in soccer since he was a little boy. He came from a family of soccer player, and his father and brother was a professional soccer player in Nigeria. By living surrounded by soccer, Wuma has never attended at university but high school. By having a strong desire to be a professional soccer player in Europe, Wuma has been working very hard in many difficult situations to gain his professionalism. Now he ends up his career in Cambodian League.

Having a conversation under hot sunlight on top stair of the National Olympic Stadium, Wuma described about his life of being a soccer player. Born with a poor family, Wuma faced many challenging when he was a child. His parents did not send him to a proper school because his family lived under a poverty line. Being known as a soccer lover, one day, he was invited to play soccer for his school annual competition, and the school provided only sports clothes for each players. Surprisingly, he could not even afford a soccer boots, so he had to play with barefoot during the match. “At that time, I was so embarrassed, but I have to control my feeling since I have a dream, I have passion, and I have a will, so I do not care with that shame experience, and I have to challenge with any circumstances to fulfill my desire,” he said.

Taking a depth breath with smiling, Wuma showed his own satisfaction about his previous and current situation. Although he was from a poor family and did not get high education like other people, he still deserves what he is doing right now since he loves soccer profession as same as his life. “Although I have not fulfilled my desire yet, I am still developing myself to reach my destination.” he said.
Having a dream to be soccer player to Europe, Wuma decided to leave his family to enhance his skill outside the country. Before moving to Cambodia, Wuma used to live in Mali and Thailand, where he have practiced his soccer skills. By having recommended from his agent at Nigeria, Wuma has been offered to live in Cambodia to pursue his career. “When I was a child, I always dream to be a professional soccer in Europe, so I have to build up my ability with any difficult situations at different places,” he said, “I made up the quick decision to stay here, and I was not hesitated of living here because Cambodian people are very kind and nice,” he added.

Back to talk about his life in Cambodia, Wuma showed his keen on interest in replying all the questions, and he behaved in pleasant while interviewing. But when asking to his personal question, he was hardly to answer, but he still kept saving his face. “I do not want my speech to be published, and you should not tell anybody about this,” he said.  Speaking with an up and voice pitch, Wuma mentioned about his situation in Cambodia. By working as a Cambodian Soccer Club, he earned only 400 US dollars per month, but whenever he joined the match, he got an extra money from the club owner. This amount of money is not enough for his fashionable life, but he could accept it. “Although the salary is quite low, I could still survive for my daily living,” he said.

Being a talented soccer player in Cambodian Soccer Club, Wuma has joined many competitions not only national but also international match. He get impressed by his coach and audiences because he is one of the best and skillful soccer player in the team. “I might born with talented. You know! I am not proud of myself. Whenever I joined the match, I felt very confident and I always hopes to win the championship,” he said.
Although soccer is one of the most favorite career of his life, he still has another dream job in mind. If he was asked to choose another job, he wanted to be a dancer. “I am not a good dancer, but I want to learn dancing because I love it, but I do not mean I give up my soccer profession,” he said.

If talking about the differences between Cambodian and foreign soccer, he would say that there are many things that should be raised. But according to his experience, Cambodian soccer has many things need to be improved. Cambodian soccer are still lacking of some soccer materials which are used during training and hosting the match, lacking of expert soccer players and coaches. “I do not criticize Cambodian Soccer, but I just tell the truth about what I have experienced,” he said.

According to Mr. May Tola, director of the Football Federation of Cambodia, nowadays there are 38 foreign soccer players in 10 teams in Cambodian League. Mostly, from 60%-70% are Nigerians. There are also Cameroonians, Ghanaians, Japanese, Antiguans, Netherland, South Korean, and Vietnam. The reason that we must have foreign players is that as we have known soccer is globalization which means we have to freely open by not discriminated on the other nationalities or racism. As the Cambodian Premier League continues to grow, it seems to become attractive to international players looking to get a fresh start.

In the future, Wuma wants to become a professional soccer player in Europe. Thus, he will builds up his skill in different areas around the world. “My dream is to play in Europe one day, and I believe the God is always by my side, my first season is to be a professional player and win the champion, and the second season I become the second team in the league and after this season, I am going to Europe,” he said.

“For those who have a desire to be soccer player, they have to be patient and struggle with all the obstacles. To me, I have tested with many challenging experiences before I have a presence in here today, so I have to keep my life moving forward from day by day”. “If we do not have passion and desire in mind, we are not able to get successful with our job,” he said. “Soccer is like a life, it requires perseverance, self-denied, hard work, sacrifice,” he said. “My father and my brother are my best role model, and I was inspired to be a professional soccer player,” he added.

He now becomes a senior student in SETEC Institute. He has five siblings, and he is the fifth son in family. By having trouble with financial support, Vichhay left his family to live in pagoda to pursue his education at university.

Speaking with up and down voice pitch, Vichhay describes about his bitter life of being a pagoda boy. Actually, he decided to live in pagoda as his family is very poor, and he can’t afford for rental house in Phnom Penh.

Although pagoda is a public place, everyone can’t stay in pagoda without informing the head of pagoda. According to Vichhay experience, before he is allowed to stay in pagoda, he has to write an application form in advance to ask permission from the head of pagoda, Tep Vong.

“My parents sells the cow and rice to support my study,” he said. Although he has a suitable place to live, he still need some money from his parents to pay for school fee “I’m really pity my parents, but I don’t know what to do because I don’t have a job and money,” he added.

Even though pagoda provides the accommodation for him, Vichhay always spends his own money for food. He spends at least 15000 riels to 20000 riels per days but except the holy day because it is the day that monks get given food from people. After the monks have eaten food, he gets to eat what is left.

Living in the pagoda means one has to adhere to its internal rules including being out no later than 9 pm. That deadline is not flexible as at that time the lock the gates of the pagoda for the security of everyone living in the pagoda. “I’m not proud of myself! I’m an obedient person, and I have never left outside pagoda later than 10 pm,” he said.

He continued “The environment in this pagoda is well-organized because of the good leading of head of pagoda.” Since Vichhay moved to live here, the security is not quite safe because there are many gangs and drug users around here. “They used to steal stuffs from the tourists and they often make chaotic activities that should not be tolerated”, he said. Therefore, after the tourists and people who live around here frequently complaint about these activities, the head of pagoda starts taking action by reporting to police, and pagoda campus has been protected by the security camera.

For daily activities, Vichhay always get up in the early morning to clean the surrounding environment, and then he picks up food for monks. He sometimes join the meditations with monks.
Vichhay said, “Although pagoda is a suitable place for me, but it is still not like home.” He sometimes has difficulty whenever the pagoda celebrate traditional feast because he has to help facilitating any works in the pagoda. As a result, he can’t even go to school and do his assignment.

By living with monks, someday Vichhay always accompany with them to get Binddha Bat outside the pagoda. Speaking with a depth breath “I don’t have much free time like other people.” My leisure activities is so boring because I always ends up my time with both pagoda and school work day by day,” he added.

If talking about politics, Vichhay is not so interested at all, and he has never joined any demonstration activities because he has been told not to do so. “Pagoda is a neutral institution, so on behalf of a pagoda boy, I have to be objective, and I have to listen my leader advice,” he said.

Since Vichhay started living in pagoda until now, he has got not only good but also bitter experiences. More than this, he has been educated to be a good person, he now get accustomed to the difficult situation. “I still won’t give up although I encounter with the obstacle in any conditions,” he said.

Vichhay is reaching on the bright side, and his life is going to upgrade because he will be graduated from university by the time next year. Sooner or later, he will find a good job, and he will be able to fulfill his parent’s desire. “This is what I always dream about when I was young, and I want to have suitable job and a knowledgeable person in the society” he adds.

“For those who have chance to stay at pagoda, please don’t be hopeless because life is the struggle,” he said, “not everyone who comes from the province get a chance to stay at a city pagoda but only people with good backgrounds who come from impoverished conditions are permitted to stay here.” It is the last message from Vichhay.

Book Reflection

I’m going to read a book which is about “the introduction to policy process.” I think my book is quite academic, and it mostly related to the concept and theory, so you will get boring sometimes. However, it might benefit to all of us in the future because it is the fundamental process of public policy. In the future, we will work in the international organization, company, or government, so it would be better if we learn something about policy process. In fact, this book will represent all about the public policy making. The main goal of this book is to fill in the gap between theoretical section and case studies. In general, every books always has its own innovation or inspiration. Therefore, this book will provide the idea of public policy in the particular way and the professionalism experiences. Although this book finds hard to understand, I will still keep track my reading habit and share about what I have learned from it.

Volunteer Work for Community Learning Service

Since there are many and general issues for us to study, today I come up with one topic which is related the volunteer work because it plays an important role in academic life just like the way we are. Apparently, being a freshman  student, we might not interested in working while we are studying ;hence, I just want to draw your attention by looking my past experience as volunteering worker only short period of time at the rural area. To me, although it was just the simple task, I got some unforgettable experiences such as cooperating, sharing, participating, entertaining, and travelling among team works . Necessarily, I would like to share this message to all of you to find out and then make a good consideration in the appropriate way by analyzing of my common writing. Let’s go through it together! On 3rd March 2012, I developed a project which was related the women’s issue in Cambodia to educate people who lived in the rural area. During that day, I went to long-distance high school, which is located in Takeo Province. Approximately, it is more than one hundred kilometer from Phnom Penh City. In fact, I started traveling from 6:30 am until 9:40 am for reaching to the destination. Thus, it took me about 3 hours to go there. You know? The main purpose of my project is to educate students to realize about “Human Trafficking”. To tell you the truth, before I started giving the speech to the audiences, I prepared the pictures and made an outline of the lecture that I have written to hang on the whiteboard in order to explain the real issues which happened nowadays. Fortunately, everything is well-organized properly. In the class, there are twenty-five adult students including with several young learners. Most of them studied at grade 9. According to my observation, they were really respectful to me since they were so quiet and showed the charming face that made me feel comfortable to share knowledge with each other. I was the one who took responsibility for giving the definition of Human Trafficking. Also, I illustrated the issues that relevant to Human Trafficking in Cambodia. I took about twenty minutes for speaking, and the rest of time I set a few questions for students as I want to know their understanding to the lecture.  Then when I finished my presentation, I took a turn for students to answer my question. Furthermore, I determined that I would give some gift for those who answered the question correctly. After a while, there were four students who response the acceptable answer. Thus, I found out that they really paid attention for what I have explained because some students were very active. Noticeable, they took note the important points while I was explaining, so it was the best way to test the knowledge of students whether they focus on the lesson or not. In my opinion, although it was just a short course lecture, I hope that students realized to what the Human Trafficking is!  How many reason that enable Human Trafficking process! Especially, I wanted to educate students who were vulnerable knew about the way to avoid from traffickers because they were too young to be recruited by traffickers. In addition, my group and I distributed some books, pens, and cakes to them in order to encourage their participation. I also developed the activity with students such as playing an educational game, sang the song, and talking about the funny story. All of the students participated that special occasion happily because they were smiling and laughing all together. According to my opinion, after I completed my task, I seem to be gotten a lot of experiences and knowledge. Frankly, I was really proud of myself that I had a special opportunity to educate the people who live in the rural area to know about Human Trafficking in Cambodia since it is related to the gender issue. Actually, I have never had experience of teaching like that, so it was the brilliant occasion for me to transmit my knowledge to others.  Therefore, I got a lot of benefits which increases the potential for my study. Nevertheless, after they studied this lecture, I hope that they would take this information to their parents, relatives, and neighbors to realize about human trafficking which always happened at the rural area. As a result, I think my project would be effectiveness if they follow my instruction because it is the best method to stop increasing human trafficking in Cambodia. Lastly, I would never ever forget this volunteer work because it is the first time that I have never done before as I have trained myself through the bitter and sweet situation at the same time.
